A diamond’s weight is measured in what is known as a ‘carat’, which is a small unit of measurement equal to 200 milligrams. Carat is not a measure of a diamond’s size, since cutting a diamond to different proportions can affect its weight.

In order to determine how big a stone will look in reality, you need to be aware of the stone’s proportions in relation to the weight. For example, using the chart below as a guide, we can see that a well-cut 1 carat stone will be approximately 6.4mm wide, while a .50 carat stone will be about 5.2mm. A whole half a carat difference in weight only equates to a 1.2mm difference in diameter.
Knowing the stone’s proportions in relation to the weight will help you estimate how big a stone will appear in reality.
The size of a diamond is proportional to its carat weight. When rough diamonds are cut and polished into finished diamonds, up to 2/3 of the total carat weight may be lost. Since larger rough gems of high quality are found less frequently than smaller rough gems of high quality, a single two carat diamond will be more expensive than two one-carat diamonds of the same quality.
